Redefining Levels of Care
Traditional optometrists answer the questions, “Can you see clearly?” and “Are your eyes healthy?” but eyesight is only one small part of vision. At the Mind-Eye Connection we treat beyond that because some patients need a more comprehensive evaluation of symptoms that might seem unrelated to the eyes.
To that end, we provide 2 distinct levels of care:
1. Developing Mind-Eye Connections:
– Can you efficiently see with ease and comfort?
– Are you effectively using your visual system?
2. Redeveloping Mind-Eye Connections:
– Are the systems connected with your eyes correctly synchronized?
Each person is unique due to differences in genetics, experiences and mind and body control. In fact, it is important to realize that there are crucial links between the body, environment and the mind which determine personality traits.
Even gifted people may have discrepancies among those connections. They may have an over developed mind, but lack social skills (environmental awareness), or they may be gifted in sports (body control) and be poor at academics, etc. Gifted leadership skills are just as important as gifted music and art skills.
At The Mind-Eye Institute we take an individualized approach to every single one of our patients. Each one of our doctors’ skills complement each other, allowing our practice to offer a broad spectrum of services for a variety of populations with various backgrounds. Below is a brief overview of the approach taken by our practice in all these different areas.
1. Developing Mind-Eye Connections
Sensory Processing Assessments
Beyond the traditional eye examination, the Mind-Eye Institute provides Visual Processing Evaluations which determine whether you efficiently see with ease and comfort. This level of evaluation includes specific testing for ranges of comfort in eye aiming, focusing, eye teaming and evaluates your awareness of and interaction with your environment.
This is helpful for people who have trouble gathering and processing incoming information, for instance those who are lacking in social skills or organization. Typically, patients that would benefit from this kind of evaluation are labeled to exhibit learning difficulties. Symptoms include not being able to easily transition from one situation to another or not being able to visualize concepts while keeping the details in mind. The most common sign observed is avoidance (i.e. avoiding driving, essay writing, reading or sports, etc.)
2. Redeveloping Mind-Eye Connections
When conventional eyeglasses are not beneficial, other systems must be considered. Are the systems connected with your eyes corrected synchronized? Here, the linkage among posture, auditory and biochemical systems are analyzed, all which influence eye control and usage.
This level of testing is beneficial for people who have delicately balanced visual systems, where minimal environmental changes are annoying. People who have difficulty in coordination, maintaining attention, or have a delay in development often benefit from this extensive battery of testing which gets to a root cause of a problem, rather than simply addressing symptoms.
Our Research & Expertise
Autism and Developmental Deficiencies
For thirty years, the Mind-Eye Institute has served patients from national and international locations, assessing peripheral eyesight in addition to central (20/20) eyesight. Children with special needs or those on the autistic spectrum, benefit from having Mind-Eye eyeglass prescriptions, which evaluate whether brain signals are being processed efficiently in a synchronized manner. For instance, eyeglass prescriptions determined by using our patented Z-Bell testing helps synchronize eye-ear connections. Those Z-Bell prescriptions enhance patients' reading, listening and attention in a majority of cases. The individualized glasses create a stable balance between central and peripheral eyesight, as well as auditory and visual localization ability.
Traumatic Brain Injury Exams
Many people suffer from various post-concussive and brain injury symptoms including photophobia, ocular fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and sleep problems and even mood changes. We understand that interactions between the electrical and biochemical pathways in the brain affect physical, physiological and psychological systems. Patients undergo thorough examination with advanced technology and testing techniques to measure visual performance and visual processing functions and determine whether the visual processing systems are in balance with other sensory systems that require perception of space and time, such as auditory localization ability.
A Different Approach to
Learning Difficulties, ADD/ADHD
At our practice, developmental examinations cover much more than how well you can see. For example, a child who is diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, CAPD, Developmental Delays, may in fact be producing these symptoms partially because of visual systems dysfunctions. It is important to realize that eyesight is only one small part of the visual system; there are many other visual inputs often not addressed during routine eye exams. Each of the systems develop in a hierarchy, linking with other systems' development. For instance, motor skills and visual skills combine for good hand-eye coordination, or visual and auditory skills combine for reading.

We understand that interactions between the electrical and biochemical pathways in the brain affect physical, physiological and psychological systems. Visual interventions that alter retinal signaling pathways impact both the electrical and biochemical systems.
Our patients undergo thorough examination with advanced technology and testing techniques to measure their reactions and responses to light entering the retina. With this information, experts at the Mind-Eye Institute determine whether a patient’s visual and auditory systems are synchronized. They consider how light might be manipulated to positively impact brain function and body chemistry. The goal is to find optimal ways of mitigating symptoms that are not improved or resolved through standard approaches.
Specifically, our team offers patients prescriptive eyeglasses, contact lenses or other optometric interventions to selectively stimulate light dispersed on the retina. Individualized lenses can:
- Maximize patients’ visual performance and visual processing capabilities and create a stable balance between hearing and visual localization.
